Holiday Hearts

Holiday
Made from Moda's Roman Holiday Charm Squares

I first saw this quilt pattern just after I had purchased a pack of Moda's Roman Holiday 5" charms. It looked like the perfect way to use those squares. So I went about adapting the Hearts Desire quilt from a book by the same name by Janet Selck. Janet is from West Jordan Utah and has an online business called Scraps of Time. She has quilt and clothing patterns that I would characterize as folk art. Like so many quilters she is mathmatically inclined and was surprised when those math skills brought out the creative side through quilting.

I used 4 five inch charm squares packs to make the hearts and 4" x 2" logs. From the original pattern I changed the long strips framing the hearts to the logs. Since the hearts have a crazy quilt look, I used my sewing machine's decorative stitches along the seam lines to quilt this area of the quilt. I also used a blanket stitch to outline the hearts. Both these methods would have probably been better done before I was ready to quilt but that is the lesson on this quilt. I finished quilting the center of the quilt with a cross hatch and then outline quilted the outer flower border.

The 54" x 66" quilt is machine piece and quilted.
