Designer Baskets
This quilt was completed using blocks from Moda's 2007 Piece and Plenty Block-of-the-Month . The theme was baskets, and each block was designed by one of Moda's fabric designers. The patterns were originally designed to go with Blackbird Design's Madeira fabric line. But I observed as I have travelled to various quilt shops that carry this mystery block-of-the-month that each shop is free to pick the fabrics they want. I received my monthly kits from Hearts and Pines Country Quilts online shop. I, too, chose to substitute fabrics as I made each block.
The basket with the blue cat was empty. So I added the cat and turned the basket so the kitty wasn't tipping sideways. This forced me to reconfigure the whole quilt. If you see other Piece and Plenty quilts that will explain the layout difference.
I tried something new with the quilt. I quilted using the big stitch method taught to me by Lorraine Hofmann. It was a great way to hand quilt it fairly quickly. I have a tutorial on this site if you want to see how to do it.
Making this quilt was such fun to make. Though I was following a pattern I felt free to take creative control with fabrics and add-ons. It is finished 74" x 85" so it is just shy of being long enough for a twin-sized bed. It is pieced and appliquéd using various techniques and big-stitch quilted by hand.
